Meet Derek Hunley

Derek Hunley, the new Assistant Vice President at Regents, brings over 25 years of healthcare business experience, including nearly 15 years in outpatient radiology. ​Derek started his career in healthcare finance at a large regional bank, eventually transitioning to GE Capital. There, he developed financing structures for healthcare real estate and physician practice projects and developed a passion for business development in healthcare. “I’ve always had a numbers and business mindset,” Derek shares. ​

This combination of finance and healthcare eventually led him to roles at Alliance Radiology and later Akumin, where he worked with hospitals to grow outpatient radiology services across the U.S.

During his career, Derek built deep connections within the industry, especially in radiology. “I met Raif through projects over the years, and joining Regents was a natural fit,” he explains. At Regents, Derek focuses on helping hospitals and health systems optimize outpatient radiology strategies. “My role is all about supporting clients in evaluating and expanding their imaging capabilities, whether through operational improvements or strategic partnerships.”

One area Derek is particularly passionate about is serving rural and underserved communities. Growing up in a smaller area with limited healthcare access, he’s committed to expanding options for these communities. “I want to help hospitals provide more options locally, so patients don’t have to drive hours to get essential imaging services,” he notes. For Derek, consulting is an opportunity to bring his expertise in finance and radiology to support meaningful changes in patient access and community health.

Outside of work, Derek enjoys a full life with his family. He and his wife of 29 years have two sons deeply involved in baseball—one pitching for the Tampa Bay Rays and the other playing at the University of Tennessee. His daughter, whom he proudly describes as having “a huge heart and a soul for serving others,” is a cardiac nurse in Nashville. Derek also loves the outdoors, spending time on his family’s farm, and is a certified master beekeeper—a unique hobby he shares with his retired father.

Derek’s extensive experience in finance, radiology, and rural healthcare makes him a valuable asset to the Regents team. His work ensures that healthcare facilities can expand and thrive, bringing quality care closer to patients who need it most. His commitment to providing healthcare access for underserved communities and his passion for business development highlight Derek’s dedication to making a lasting impact in the field.
